2022 DODGE Challenger

Recalls, Specs & Safety Report

Expert Verdict
โš ๏ธElevated Concerns

The 2022 Dodge Challenger shows moderate reliability concerns primarily due to issues with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which may lead to sensor failure. Given that these defects typically manifest earlyโ€”within the first 10,000 milesโ€”owners should remain vigilant about tire safety.

Key Factor:TPMS sensor vulnerabilities

๐Ÿ“‹Why This Matters

The existence of two recalls related to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System highlights a significant quality concern for a vehicle typically celebrated for its performance and engineering prowess. As sports cars like the Challenger are expected to blend power with safety, any failure in monitoring tire pressure could potentially lead to dangerous situations on the road. For a model that embraces a legacy of muscle and might, such issues could tarnish its reputation if not addressed promptly.

Mileage Failure Analysis

โš™๏ธEngineering Insight

The peak failure range of 0-20k miles indicates that most TPMS-related problems arise early in ownership. This trend suggests that buyers should be particularly attentive within their first year of driving, as sensor failures can occur before routine maintenance schedules even kick in.

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2022 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 vehicles. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensor battery may fail prematurely and cause the sensor to become inoperative. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Consequence

Inoperative TPMS sensors will not alert the driver to low tire pressure. In addition, a TPMS warning light that is already illuminated from a failed battery sensor will mask an actual tire pressure failure issue. Either of these scenarios can result in tire failure and increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the TPMS sensors, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 2, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is Z68.

Additional Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

The contact owned a 2022 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated that while her son was driving approximately 65 MPH on I-85 in the left lane, the driver noticed a BMW quickly approaching. The driver attempted to change lanes to the center lane, and the rear end of the vehicle slid out and the vehicle fishtailed into the other vehicle in the far-right lane, traveled across three lanes of traffic and crashed into a brick wall median and then went across all three lanes. The contact stated that after crashing into the brick wall, the seat belt became unlatched. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver sustained injuries to the wrist, which had struck the steering wheel, and the left hand which struck the door on impact. Medical attention was provided at the scene by the EMT and at the hospital the following day. The steering wheel air bag, driver's side side-curtain air bags, and passengerโ€™s side air bags deployed during the crash. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The insurance company later towed the vehicle to a tow lot. The local dealer was contacted and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle. The inspector determined that the driverโ€™s seat belt was not latched during the crash after performing six push-pull tests on the seat belt. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
