Recalls, Specs & Safety Report

Expert Verdict
โš ๏ธElevated Concerns

The 2024 RAM 4500 presents concerning reliability due to two significant recalls involving the steering control module and driver airbag deployment. With an average failure mileage of just over 11,000 miles, these issues could pose safety risks for both current owners and potential buyers.

Key Factor:Safety concerns with recalls

๐Ÿ“‹Why This Matters

The defects identified in the recallsโ€”the steering control module issues and potential non-deployment of the driverโ€™s airbagโ€”are critical safety factors that could lead to serious accidents. Given the vehicle's purpose as a heavy-duty truck, which often operates under demanding conditions, these failures could compromise driver safety and vehicle control at crucial moments. Such lapses not only threaten personal safety but also tarnish the brand's reputation for reliability in this segment, which has historically emphasized durability and performance under pressure.

Summary: Year-over-year trends indicate that while RAM trucks have typically shown strength in durability, this model year introduces elevated risk levels due to these recalls. Compared to expectations for a heavy-duty truck like the RAM 4500, which is designed for maximum operational efficiency, these issues signify a disappointing departure from reliability standards.

STEERING:STEERING CONTROL MODULE

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2023 Ram 1500 Classic, Ram 3500 Classic, 3500 Cab Chassis, 2023-2024 Ram 2500, 4500/5500 Cab Chassis, and Ram 3500 vehicles. The steering column control module may cause the high beams to activate when the turn signal is used or activate the turn signal when the high beams are used. In addition, the turn signal self-canceling feature may not function properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Consequence

Turn signals and/or high beams that do not function as intended may cause confusion or reduced visibility to other road users, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will update the steering column control module (SCCM) software, and inspect and replace the module, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 19, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's numbers for this recall are B2A and D5A.

Additionally, the brake pedal was depressed but traveled to the floorboard, and the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that as the vehicle was approaching the guard rail, he attempted to make a right turn to avoid the guard rail, but the vehicle continued to pull to the left, and the front driver's side axle housing that had detached hit a road barrier, causing the front end of the vehicle to hit the guard rail. The vehicle then crossed the entrance ramp, and the front driver's side of the vehicle crashed into the guard rail located on the left side of the ramp. The contact stated that the front driver's side axle housing separated from the vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The ambulance transported the contact to the hospital, where the contact was informed he had sustained a secondary whiplash, back bruises, and left knee injury.
