2022 GMC Yukon XL

Recalls, Specs & Safety Report

Expert Verdict
⚠️Elevated Concerns

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL exhibits notable reliability concerns, particularly with its critical systems such as seat belts, engine components, and exterior lighting. Given the average failure mileage of approximately 46,569 miles, it’s crucial for current owners to remain vigilant and proactive about these issues.

Key Factor:Multiple critical recalls

📋Why This Matters

The presence of three recalls on the 2022 GMC Yukon XL raises significant concerns related to vehicle safety and performance. Notably, the issues with seat belts could compromise occupant protection in the event of a collision, while problems with engine components may lead to severe operational failures. The exterior lighting recall emphasizes a potential visibility risk that could affect both the driver’s ability to see and be seen on the road. These defects not only pose immediate risks but can also tarnish GMC's long-standing reputation for quality engineering in full-size SUVs.

SEAT BELTS:CRITICAL FASTENERS

Summary

General Motors, LLC (M) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with third-row seats. The rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seat belt buckle assembly may have been improperly formed.

Consequence

A seat belt with a deformed rivet may not properly restrain an occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the rivet head formation on both the left and right side third-row seat belt buckle assemblies and replace seat belt buckle assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed September 28, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 1, 2022. I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the vehicle I purchased from your dealership. Despite my expectations at the time of purchase, the vehicle has not met the standards that were represented to me. This letter is intended to address my concerns regarding the vehicle’s features, undisclosed recalls, and significant mechanical and safety issues discovered immediately after delivery. I discovered—through the GMC mobile application, not through the dealership—that the vehicle had two to three active recalls at the time I received it, including recalls involving the engine and transmission. I was never informed of these recalls by the dealership prior to or at the time of sale, which is extremely concerning. After discovering the recalls myself, I scheduled a service appointment. I was informed that the recalls were addressed and marked as resolved in GMC Springdale. Despite the recalls being cleared, only two days later, the vehicle began experiencing issues. The screen displayed warning messages, and the vehicle developed a vibration, to the point that it became unsafe to drive. They are changing us $820+tax I was forced to use roadside assistance, it hasn't been a month yet and the dealer are refusing to cover the damage. I have been calling but they said they are busy or they use somebody else to speak.

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 - 60 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended for approximately one second before accelerating. A dealer was contacted. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnosis was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and was in the process of towing the vehicle to another location. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

Purchased used vehicle in June 2025 when purchased was not advised about an open recall vehicle loss power on 07-29-2025 called dealer advised that car had loss power while driving with entire family in vehicle. Brought vehicle in for checking said open recall they ran a scope test said it passed and only a high velocity oil change would be needed this was on 08-06-2025 two weeks later the vehicle loss power again while driving and caused a vehicle accident and bodily injury and GM states that this was an alleged issue when reported. Will not honor warranty on engine.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

While driving northbound on I2 at approximately 70mph I experienced a sudden loss of engine power. Vehicle would not accelerate and engine ultimately powered off. I was able to move across three lanes of traffic and pull over on the side of the highway. I attempted to restart the vehicle but was unsuccessful and after about 10 minutes the engine managed to start. The ‘check engine’ light was on after the incident and upon arriving back home I ran a code scan that resulted in code P129F indicates a problem with the fuel pump control module. There is recall #N252516900 dated 9/11/2025 which covers this issue for 2021 models only. This occurred on a 2023 model.

I did slam my breaks before impact but I would guess I was still going 30-35mph at impact. Car has not been inspected yet. It is still in our possession. We have made in insurance claim. At highway speed, in heavy traffic, and falling snow, the engine seized with sudden loss of power, including loss of brake and steering sensitivity. We were traveling downhill so, while avoiding other traffic and weather, maintained momentum to pull over to the side. We were stranded at night in snowy weather in remote Utah. It took hours to get towed to the nearest town, Fillmore, where the mechanic determined that the engine was seized and that no mechanic in the town could repair the issue. GM would not tow vehicle to our home, they would only tow to nearest dealership - which was farther away from our home (over 3 hours away). After repeated attempts with GM for tow assistance over the course of 13 days, we towed the vehicle to Salt Lake City, our home city at our own expense. The Dealer said 6 of 8 rod bushings were bad, ordered a new engine which took over 2 months to receive and install. Catastrophic event occurred [XXX], Time trying to get GM to tow vehicle, ending with our own expense 2/26/2025, Finally returned from dealership with new engine 5/1/2025 - 64 days from dealership receipt of vehicle - 77 days from catastrophic event. Continues to have electrical issues that affect controls like radio, ac/heat, start/stop. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The driver-side headlight and turn signal on my 2022 GMC Yukon stopped functioning completely. This issue began before GM recall 22V‑903 and worsened immediately after the recall repair was performed. The recall repair required three separate dealership visits because it was initially performed improperly, yet the problem was never fully resolved. During interactions with GM and the dealership, I was told the repair might involve a $600 part, but they could not guarantee that replacing it would fix the issue. It is unreasonable and unsafe for me to be expected to cover the cost of repairs for a problem that was caused or worsened by a recall repair performed incorrectly. The malfunction creates a serious safety hazard, as oncoming drivers cannot see my turn signals, and I nearly had an accident because of it. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership and documented in GM Case #74327012. Prior to complete failure, the driver-side turn signal and daytime running lights occasionally stayed on after shutting off the vehicle which I was told that was caused by the recall. The vehicle has been inspected by authorized GM dealerships multiple times, but the defect persists. The component is available for inspection upon request.
