2020 TOYOTA Tundra

Recalls, Specs & Safety Report

Expert Verdict
⚠️Elevated Concerns

The 2020 Toyota Tundra exhibits a range of reliability concerns due to multiple recalls and complaints, particularly affecting critical systems like steering and fuel delivery. With a significant percentage of failures occurring within the first 20,000 miles, this model prompts caution for potential buyers.

Key Factor:Multiple critical system recalls

πŸ“‹Why This Matters

The safety of a vehicle is paramount, especially in the truck segment where dependability is expected to support both work and leisure activities. The recalls affecting the fuel system and steering represent significant risks; a failure in these areas could lead to severe accidents or loss of vehicle control. Given that trucks often serve demanding roles, such deficiencies can not only compromise safety but also tarnish Toyota's long-standing reputation for durability in their full-size pickups.

Focus Area:Safety Profile
πŸ“Š

Expert Analysis

Historically, Toyota has maintained a strong reliability profile, but the 2020 Tundra does not align with this trend. The frequency and severity of the recalls suggest an emerging risk profile that is more troubling than the general expectations for full-size trucks.

Spontaneous explosion of sunroof, under normal driving status, pictures were taken, the toyota deealer has replaced and repaired at my cost, I have filed an insurance claim with USAA and uploaded bill and pictures, The shattered glass could have entered the cab but did not. No warning lights or other symptoms appeared before the incident.

STRUCTURE

The sunroof shattered while driving down the freeway. No vehicles near or overpasses near. The shade was closed so the glass fell on it not on my head or passengers that could have been present. Sounded like a loud pop. Then I heard wind noise. The glass is blown upward, not downward. I am 40 year auto technician and own my own shop. Its my personal truck I bought new. Has never had any issues at all. This is a defect of some sort. My thought is, since I never use it. The seals aroung the glass bound in the roof opening, thus binding it where it finally flexed and shattered.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V682000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Driving on the highway and the sunroof spontaneously exploded β€” portions of glass traveling up and out of the vehicle, with some falling into the sunshade. Skies were clear with temperatures around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. There were no overpasses or other structure from which debris could have fallen, nor could it have come from another vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES

I was driving in a 25 MPH zone approaching a red light preparing to stop. I had increased the pressure on my brake pedal and then my foot slipped of the pedal just seconds before I ran into a truck that was stopped at the red light. After further investigation I found out that the brake pedal pad has been substituted by Toyota Manufacturing. My 2020 Tundra was purchased new and has 8,800 miles on it. The petal pad is made from a PVC plastic material as stated on the bottom of the pad. There are no part #s on the pad which is suspicious that this is not a Toyota pad. The PVC material is very slippery, especially if the surface was wet. Come to find out that my 2023 RX 350 has the same brake pad. Both of these pedal pads will be replaced immediately from Toyota.
