BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Summary

American Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may get into the rearview camera mounting holes and enter the camera lens and cause a distorted image, or no image at all. Additionally, if the rearview camera view mode is set to top-down view, or switched from that view to another mode in a bright environment, the image may not display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

Consequence

A distorted or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is W83.

LANE DEPARTURE

2020 Honda Odyssey EX LKAS, Collision Avoidance, Auto High Beam etc. warning lights to cycle continuously. Had my Honda mechanic check problem and Camera Monocular, forward facing camera causing issues and requires replacement. This is only a 5 year old vehicle with 60,000 miles on it! Honda and many used auto parts want upwards of $850 for camera and then as much as $1500 to replace. This is a serious safety issue. None of this vehicles Safety assist items work without this camera.

Safety Systems๐Ÿ”ถ Medium
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE

In December, out of the blue suddenly had rotating list of warning on dash panel (Lane Keeping Assist problem, Collision mitigation system, departure mitigation system problem, auto high-beam problem, Adaptive cruise control problem) plus Brake Warning system light is on constantly and brake hold not working. At first this was intermittent but now on constantly when starting and driving car. Only 55k miles on my Odyssey. Dealer said he had 3 of these in the last three months. Said it was Multi Purpose front camera failure. Cost over $1500. Since huge safety issue putting not only my family but other cars/people at risk, we are paying to repair, however we just found hundreds of people complaining about this same issue. This should be a Honda Recall. We did nothing wrong to cause this safety issue and this part should NOT fail in 5 years. I don't have the final invoice yet but I can upload later if required

Other๐Ÿ”ต Low
LANE DEPARTURE

The tailgate control module has been water damaged and needed to be replaced twice. My local Honda dealership was unable to correct the issue and stated that it is due to a water leak in the frame of the vehicle/tailgate. The dealership has identified the tailgate control module as the cause of the electrical issues causing the battery to die, and advanced safety features to malfunction. Warning lights came on for break system problem, lane departure mitigation system problem, and many other systems all caused by the tailgate control module being water damaged from a leak in the frame.

Safety Systems๐Ÿ”ต Low
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE

The front camera that regulates the adaptive cruise control failed. Now it does not allow for any of the safety features to work. Iโ€™ve gone on multiple Honda forums and a lot of people have the same issue.

Other๐Ÿ”ต Low
UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Summary of the Problem: The power tailgate motor on my 2020 Honda Odyssey has failed multiple times, causing the liftgate to stop midway, refuse to open, or abruptly close on its own. This failure creates a safety risk because the tailgate can unexpectedly drop or close on adults or children standing underneath it. Detailed Description: The tailgate motor on my 2020 Honda Odyssey has stopped working correctly on three different occasions. I have taken the vehicle to the Honda dealership repeatedly and have paid hundreds of dollars for repairs, yet the problem keeps returning. The tailgate will randomly stop while opening, won't fully lift, or will close unexpectedly and forcefully. This is especially dangerous when loading children or cargo, as the tailgate can fall without warning. After researching online, I found many other 2020 Odyssey owners reporting the same tailgate motor failure, indicating that this is a widespread issue rather than normal wear. The repeated failure suggests a potential design or safety defect. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this recurring malfunction as a potential safety issue and determine whether a recall or corrective action is necessary.

Electrical๐Ÿ”ต Low
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Dash has warning light showing "Power Tailgate Problem", and power tailgate will not function. The next day there was heavy rain, and the dash had a flickering warning showing the tailgate was open. This also caused the interior lights to flicker on and off as the tailgate open warning was flickering on and off. I returned the van to my home for fear that the tailgate would open automatically while driving down the road. I had the tailgate control module replaced on February 27, 2025 for this same issue, which was due to a tailgate seal leaking water onto the tailgate control module that shorted the module. This is now the second time within less than one year this same module has shorted out. This is a known issue with a class action lawsuit already filed against Honda that should result in a recall. The potential danger of the tailgate opening while driving makes this minivan not usable to transport my kids for fear of their safety.

Safety Systems๐Ÿ”ต Low
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

After researching I find it to be a sensor in the windshield is a common problem

Safety Systems๐Ÿ”ต Low
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE

The forward facing camera failed on my 2020 Odyssey with only 90,000 miles. Because of this failure, I am loosing all my forward facing safety features. This seems to be a common issue across many Honda vehicles and most users report being told the issue is being caused by overheating. Since users are being told this is a cause and effect issue, the manufacturer should address this at their expense. I first noticed this issue in mid September 2025.

Engine/Powertrain๐Ÿ”ต Low
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

When pressing the accelerator, there is an extremely loud and abnormal noise coming from the fuel pump. The noise is so severe that it raises safety concerns while driving. The issue appears similar to fuel-pumpโ€“related problems reported in other recalled Honda vehicles.

Engine/Powertrain๐Ÿ”ต Low
ENGINE

My wife started hearing a knocking sound while driving, coming from under the hood. I opened the hood while the engine was idling and could tell the sound was coming from inside the engine. Checked the oil level and it was in the operating range and looked clean. I had just changed the oil and filter 08/2025. After that we immediately drove it to the Honda dealer where we purchased the vehicle and the service manager heard the noise, checked for recalls, but could only find the recall for the 2019 Honda Odyssey [XXX] The service manager called in one of his mechanics to listen to the noise in the service manager bay and he said, "Sounds like a bad rod bearing". They then took the vehicle to inspect it further in the mechanic's garage, but as they were pulling it into the bay the engine complete seized up. The vehicle only has 68k miles on it, but now its beyond the warranty period. I was also told by the dealer when I purchased it, that it and the 2019 are identical, so why was the recall issued for the 2019 Odyssey, but not the 2020 model? I'm reading lots of similar reports of this same exact issue with the 2020 model from Honda forums and on youtube posts. This engine problem is clearly larger than the initial recall that was issued in 2024. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
