2024 BMW XM

Recalls, Specs & Safety Report

Expert Verdict
⚠️Elevated Concerns

The 2024 BMW XM has a concerning reliability profile with five recalls addressing critical systems like electronic stability control and seat belts. Given the peak failure range is within the first 20,000 miles, prospective buyers should be vigilant about these issues as they may lead to significant driving risks early in ownership.

Key Factor:Multiple critical recalls

📋Why This Matters

The defects associated with the 2024 BMW XM are particularly impactful because they involve core safety components that are essential for vehicle stability and crash protection. Issues with electronic stability control can severely compromise handling under slippery conditions, while faulty seat belt systems pose direct safety risks in the event of an accident. With several recalls documenting these vulnerabilities, potential buyers should thoroughly assess these aspects before making a decision.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2023-2025 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models and model years. The integrated brake (IB) system may malfunction and result in a loss of power brake assist or cause the Antilock Brake (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems to not function properly.

Consequence

A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle. Additionally, malfunctioning ABS and/or DSC systems can cause a loss of vehicle control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the integrated brake system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed between June and December 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls Royce customer service at 1-877-877-3735.

Additional Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

STRUCTURE:BODY

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 XM vehicles. The tailgate panel may detach from the mounting structure due to improper adhesive bonding that occurred during manufacturing.

Consequence

A panel that detaches from a vehicle can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the tailgate panel as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 17, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 XM, 2025 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, and Alpina XB7 vehicles. The seat belt system may inaccurately detect that passengers are belted, preventing the seat belt warning light from illuminating and possibly causing the supplemental restraint system to not deploy as intended during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Consequence

A seat belt warning light that does not alert occupants of an unbelted seat belt or an SRS system that deploys improperly can both increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 12, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Purchased 2024 XM in July 2024. Since then all 4 rims have cracked. Quote by BMW to replace $2500. If replaced I would have paid 10k in a year to replace wheels plus the 3k spent in May and June 2025 for a set of new tires. This week my PSI was zero. I could hear the air coming out. Took XM to a tire shop to find out nothing was wrong. The tire was fine and the previously repaired crack was fine. The shop added air and it held. Then the next day, I could hear air seeping from another tire. My husband drove it around the subdivision and came back home to add air. The seeping had stopped. There’s not a week that I’m not adding air to the tires. I keep a compressor in my XM, whereas last week I had to inflate the tires after work twice. The tire shop unbiased opinion is that, there’s a flaw in the design such that, the wheels are too big for 23” tires, with inadequate spacing between the two. The shop that repairs the rims charges $195. As a women Driving this vehicle, it gives me anxiety because I feel its unsafe to drive not knowing if an unsuspecting crack will cause the vehicle to become disabled or if a tire would blow, causing loss of control. If BMW maintains historical data on tire conditions, you will see how often, sometimes daily or weekly, that the PSI is low. BMW has to know about this flaw, as forums on bimmers, Facebook and Reddit have many discussions. For a 160k vehicle BMW should own the issue and cover replacement cost for new rims.

The vehicle was repaired, but four months later, the rear passenger’s and driver’s rims cracked. The vehicle was towed back to the same dealer, where it was determined that the rims were cracked. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000.

I am having problems with the braking system and can not get the car fixed.
